Optimizing cooperation through UNCTAD to strengthen Indonesia’s diplomacy
Cooperation between Indonesia and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) plays an important role in supporting economic development and strengthening Indonesia’s capacity to navigate global trade dynamics. As a developing country and a member of UNCTAD since its establishment in 1964, Indonesia has benefited from various forms of technical assistance, peer reviews, and capacity-building support. Using secondary data, this paper examines opportunities to optimize Indonesia UNCTAD cooperation. The analysis identifies two key factors influencing these efforts: internal coordination among Indonesian government agencies and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic at both the domestic and global levels. Based on these findings, the paper presents policy recommendations for the Indonesian government, particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to strengthen interagency coordination, improve the utilization of UNCTAD programs, and maximize the benefits of international cooperation in advancing Indonesia’s national development objectives.
