To save or to add: reformulation of Indonesia’s strategy in Unesco world heritage committee
The conservation of UNESCO World Heritage sites presents an important challenge for Indonesia in safeguarding its cultural and natural heritage while strengthening its participation in global heritage governance. Although Indonesia has nine inscribed World Heritage sites, several face conservation challenges, including the Tropical Rainforest Heritage of Sumatra, which remains on the List of World Heritage in Danger, and Komodo National Park, which has received close attention from UNESCO. Meanwhile, Indonesia maintains a number of sites on its Tentative List that could be considered for future nominations. This paper examines Indonesia’s existing strategies within the UNESCO World Heritage program and explores potential policy reforms to strengthen the effectiveness of its participation. Using scenario planning, it also investigates the future role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in enhancing cross-sectoral coordination, multilateral diplomacy, and international cooperation, while prioritizing the conservation of existing sites over the pursuit of new nominations.
