The future of Indonesia - Afghanistan Relations: humanity approach for peace and security
Political uncertainty in Afghanistan following changes in government requires Indonesia to formulate a clear approach to bilateral relations that considers national interests, global peace, and international security. In line with its constitutional commitment to contributing to world order, Indonesia needs to assess the prospects for future engagement with Afghanistan amid evolving political conditions and widespread negative perceptions of the Taliban-led government. Using scenario planning, this paper develops strategic recommendations for the future of Indonesia–Afghanistan relations. It emphasizes the importance of sustained coordination between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant government agencies, institutions, and Islamic organizations in Indonesia to evaluate the feasibility and direction of bilateral engagement. The paper also recommends employing second track diplomacy to maintain communication with the Taliban led government while prioritizing humanitarian engagement over political considerations to support international peace and security.
