Circular economy as new potential for sustainable development: the role of Ministry of Foreign Affairs
The circular economy is a closed-loop economic approach that seeks to replace the linear take–make–dispose model through resource efficiency, waste reduction, and material reuse. It offers economic and environmental benefits while supporting the achievement of sustainable development targets. In line with Indonesia’s national policy direction, this paper proposes a strategic role for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in advancing the implementation of the circular economy. It examines the benefits and challenges identified in Bappenas’ six-month study of five industrial sectors in Indonesia and develops scenarios outlining the conditions required to realize the circular economy’s potential. The paper recommends strengthening the Ministry’s coordination role among domestic stakeholders and international partners, working in collaboration with Indonesian diplomatic missions abroad. These efforts could expand international cooperation, facilitate knowledge exchange, and improve access to circular economy practices and innovations that support Indonesia’s sustainable development agenda.
