Enhancing spouse role in Indonesian mission
The evolving nature of diplomacy and foreign service assignments presents challenges for diplomats’ spouses, who must balance their personal and professional lives with overseas postings. Existing policies in many ministries of foreign affairs tend to reflect a conventional single-career family model, leaving the personal and professional development needs of diplomats’ spouses insufficiently accommodated. Frequent relocations can limit opportunities to pursue careers, develop professional competencies, and maintain a sense of career fulfillment, particularly among spouses with higher education and established professional backgrounds before accompanying their partners abroad. These circumstances may adversely affect their psychological wellbeing and motivation. Considering the increasingly diverse backgrounds of diplomats’ spouses, this paper examines their needs and challenges and explores opportunities to strengthen existing policies within Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The proposed policy recommendations include recognizing the roles and aspirations of both husbands and wives, providing opportunities for personal and professional development, facilitating access to employment opportunities, and establishing policies that respond to spouses’ diverse needs. Institutional support for diplomats’ spouses is expected to improve family wellbeing while contributing to the effectiveness of Indonesian diplomatic missions abroad.
