"Fika" x "Ngopi": A driving force for Indonesia's specialty coffee products in Sweden and the Nordic Region
Sweden and other Nordic countries represent potential markets for Indonesian specialty coffee exports due to their high coffee consumption and cultural similarities in coffee-drinking traditions, particularly the concept of fika in Sweden and ngopi in Indonesia. As a major producer of high-quality coffee, Indonesia offers a diverse range of specialty products, including Aceh Gayo, West Java Puntang, Papua Wamena, Flores Bajawa, Toraja, and Bali Kintamani coffee. However, Indonesian specialty coffee remains relatively unfamiliar to consumers in Sweden and other Nordic countries. Therefore, promotional strategies that emphasize cultural similarities in coffee consumption are needed to strengthen people-to-people relations between Indonesia and Sweden while increasing awareness of Indonesian coffee products. These efforts may include disseminating information about Indonesian specialty coffee, providing educational initiatives targeting millennials, and establishing coffee houses at Indonesian representative offices in Sweden and other Nordic countries. Such facilities could serve as centers for education, information dissemination, and market exploration, connecting Indonesian coffee producers and entrepreneurs with importers and business operators in destination countries. Integrating cultural engagement with economic diplomacy is expected to enhance the visibility and competitiveness of Indonesian specialty coffee and expand its export opportunities in Nordic markets.
