Harnessing artificial intelligence in Indonesia’s diplomacy

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia (KEMLU) has a strong potential, yet it is not developed strategically. This is due to security concerns on confidential data, the lack of technical experts, limited budget, and low level of willingness to innovate from the leadership.
The author believes that AI will inevitably become a more integral part of Indonesia’s diplomacy. KEMLU is already using AI in routine services to process structured data such as flight clearance application and diplomatic cables analysis, in addition to IBM Watson that functions as a digital assistance with many embedded “intelligence”
tools. However, more needs to be done to integrate AI in foreign policy decision making process, specifically to tackle the challenge of complexity surrounding diplomacy.
