Analyzing Indonesia’s proposal as WHO vaccine hub
As part of the efforts to strengthen national health resilience, and to ensure fair and equitable global access to vaccines, Indonesia has expressed its interest to become the WHO vaccine hub. This vaccine hub is an mRNA vaccine technology transfer facility covering the Asia region.
However, the road to become WHO vaccine hub is not easy. Indonesia is lack of mRNA vaccine infrastructure. Indonesia is also in tough competition against India and South Korea. This condition leads to a question whether Indonesia should advance its proposal or rather seek another channel in developing mRNA vaccine technology.
Furthermore, using SWOT analysis, this paper finds that WHO vaccine hub might not be as promising, due to lack of support from big vaccine companies. With a consideration of potential support from WHO and the urgency to start the mRNA vaccine development, this paper recommends a dual track policy in which we advance the proposal to become the WHO vaccine hub, while at the same time seek to strengthen b-to-b mRNA vaccine cooperation.
