Enhanced efforts for Indonesian migrant workers protection in domestic sector in Saudi Arabia
Indonesian migrant workers employed in the domestic sector in Saudi Arabia face various workplace challenges, including exploitation associated with the kafala system. Indonesian diplomatic missions in Riyadh and Jeddah have undertaken efforts to address cases involving Indonesian migrant workers through direct diplomatic engagement with relevant Saudi Arabian authorities. However, these efforts encounter several obstacles, particularly limited access to migrant worker data and the lack of optimal outcomes in engaging relevant stakeholders. Understanding Saudi Arabian culture is also essential to conducting effective diplomatic missions and resolving migrant worker issues. Strengthening the protection of Indonesian migrant workers requires a more effective policy framework, including comprehensive access to Indonesian citizens’ data and more specific diplomatic approaches tailored to the local context. Drawing on individual experiences, this paper proposes strategies and policy recommendations to improve the performance of Indonesian diplomatic missions in Saudi Arabia and strengthen diplomatic efforts to address issues affecting Indonesian migrant workers in the domestic sector.
