Increasing Indonesian representation in international organizations for a more effective indonesian diplomacy
This paper examines the importance of increasing Indonesian representation in international organizations to strengthen Indonesia’s diplomacy, particularly in multilateral forums. The number of Indonesians working in organizations of which Indonesia is a member remains relatively small and is considered underrepresented, despite the potential benefits and opportunities that greater representation could create. Key challenges include limited government support, insufficient awareness of available opportunities and incentives, reluctance to compete with foreign nationals, and gaps in supporting skills such as English and other languages. Seconding diplomats to international organizations also faces obstacles, including unclear regulations and staffing shortages at headquarters. The paper identifies these challenges and proposes short-term and medium- to long-term recommendations for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Indonesia’s missions worldwide. The recommendations aim not only to increase the number of Indonesians working in international organizations, but also to strengthen their capacity and expand Indonesian representation in decision-making positions.
