Empowering Foreign Language Graduates Diplomats by Preserving their Language Capability with Specialized Language Training Program
Foreign language proficiency is an essential tool for effective diplomacy. However, Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) faces challenges in maintaining the language skills of diplomats who graduated from foreign language programs but have limited opportunities to use their studied languages in overseas assignments. This paper examines diplomats’ perspectives and motivation regarding foreign language training beyond English and evaluates the feasibility of developing specialized programs. It recommends improving language training and institutional support to maintain and develop diplomats’ language proficiency, ultimately strengthening Indonesia’s diplomatic effectiveness and encouraging continuous language learning.
