Rebuilding tourism: Ministry of Foreign Affairs strategy for tourism recovery
This paper examines the strategies that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs could implement to aid Indonesia’s national tourism recovery following the impact of the pandemic. The tourism sector was hit particularly hard by the pandemic, with Indonesia losing at least IDR 10 trillion in 2020. Recovery efforts were pursued by the government, including Travel Corridor Arrangements (TCAs) and pilot projects to reopen tourism destinations. The Ministry completed negotiations on TCAs with the United Arab Emirates, the Republic of Korea, Singapore and China. While the initial arrangements were limited to specific categories, mostly essential business travel and diplomatic or official engagements, they could serve as entry points for broader cooperation, particularly in tourism. This paper analyses potential strategies for the Ministry to support the recovery of national tourism and its role in responding to challenges in the sector.
