Enhancing Indonesia’s nation branding through public diplomacy
This paper explores how public diplomacy can enhance Indonesia’s nation branding to advance national interests and achieve foreign-policy goals. In an increasingly globalized world, competition between countries has made nation branding more prominent as states seek to cultivate a positive image and become more attractive and competitive internationally. The paper argues that, for more than 70 years, Indonesia has lacked a solid nation brand and has yet to pursue efficient nation-branding strategies. Branding Indonesia for trade, tourism, and investment could bring economic benefits, help correct negative stereotypes, and communicate a fuller picture of the country to international audiences. The paper is divided into three parts: a conceptual framework introducing the main concepts; an analysis of current nation-branding and public-diplomacy practices, including their challenges and opportunities; and proposed solutions to address those challenges and improve the effectiveness of Indonesia’s nation branding. It also highlights the roles of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Indonesia’s global network of diplomatic missions.
