Analysis on Bridging UNCLOS and UNTOC to Combat IUU Fishing within the EEZ
This study examines illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing (IUUF) as a form of transnational organized crime (TOC) that threatens environmental sustainability, economic stability, and national security. Using literature reviews, case studies, and interviews, the study analyzes the limitations of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) in addressing IUUF. It argues that international cooperation and the application of the United Nations Convention on Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) could strengthen enforcement. The paper also explores the feasibility of amending existing treaties or establishing a dedicated international convention to combat IUUF effectively.
