Refocusing Indonesia’s engagement with Yemen
This paper examines the need for Indonesia to refocus its engagement with Yemen, given that the relationship between the two countries has long been rooted in history, dating back centuries when merchants from the Hadhramaut region in modern-day Yemen arrived in present-day Indonesia. Formal diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Yemen began in 1992 with the opening of the Indonesian Embassy in Sana'a that same year. However, due to the war raging since 2011, Indonesia has been forced to temporarily suspend its Embassy's operations in Yemen since December 2018, and the COVID-19 pandemic has also forced Indonesia to refocus its national priorities, including foreign policy. The paper evaluates Indonesia's current engagement priorities with Yemen and assesses the current priorities of Indonesia's foreign policy in general, identifies challenges and potential opportunities to explore, and proposes three policy choices that can be taken by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to refocus Indonesia's engagement with Yemen.
