Rethinking the role of digital platforms to accelerate Indonesia’s tourism recovery
This paper examines the need to reconsider the role of digital platforms in accelerating Indonesia's tourism recovery following the pandemic. The pandemic has led to a surge in the use of digital platforms worldwide, with social media usage growing rapidly since the outbreak of the virus. With the arrival of the vaccine, the Indonesian government is now looking to bounce back economically, with tourism high on the agenda. This sector is one of the country's major contributors to GDP, but it has also been badly hit by the pandemic. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through Indonesian missions abroad, should support the speedy recovery of the tourism sector by optimising digital platforms, given that virtual engagement was the only option during the pandemic. This paper provides policy recommendations for the Ministry and examines the current implementation of digital platforms by Indonesian Missions abroad, which could be improved. It also explores the future potential of digital platforms as an alternative public engagement tool that can reach wider audiences and remain relevant even after the pandemic has passed.
