Sharpening Indonesia’s economic diplomacy in promoting halal food sector
Despite being the world’s largest Muslim population and the economy with the highest gross
domestic product (GDP) among Muslim-majority countries, Indonesia is currently the biggest
global halal food market, but nowhere among the major global halal food producers and
exporters. The Indonesia Islamic Economic Masterplan (MEKSI) 2019-2024 has outlined a set
of strategies to achieve the vision of Indonesia as the World’s Leading Islamic Economic
Centre by 2024, including in halal food sector. It is argued that the promotion of Indonesia’s
halal food sector through economic diplomacy has insufficiently received major policy attention
of the Government of Indonesia, especially the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) RI. In fact,
a robust international promotion is necessary to help accelerate the development of national
halal food industry. This paper offers a set of policy recommendations to MOFA RI on how to
sharpen Indonesia’s economic diplomacy to promote national halal food sector abroad as part
of implementing the MEKSI. Connecting Indonesia’s halal food industry to a wider global halal
market and enhancing international recognition of Indonesia’s halal certification system are
arguably the key interests that should be pursued by Indonesia in its economic diplomacy on
halal food sector.
