Strengthening the role of Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the acceleration of new and renewable energy development in Indonesia
Indonesia has enormous resources of renewable energy spreading throughout the country. As part
of its commitment to Paris Agreement, Indonesia has pledged to increase its renewable energy share
up to 23% in the energy mix by 2025 and up to 31% by 2050. Yet, penetration of renewables as a
clean energy source in the country remains limited and fall far below the target. As challenges in
developing renewable energy in the country are heavily related with investment opportunity,
availability of high technology, as well as capacity building cooperation, this paper evaluates the
current development of renewable energy as well as the supporting role that has been implemented
by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the backbone of Indonesia’s diplomacy in addressing those
challenges. This paper provides an analysis on how the Ministry of Foreign Affairs can further
strengthen its support for the acceleration of new and renewable energy development in Indonesia,
based on its role in conducting energy diplomacy with partner countries.
