Optimizing Indonesian Diplomacy: the Urge to Enhance Indonesian Diplomat's Language Skill
Foreign language proficiency is essential for effective diplomacy, as diplomats must communicate and convey messages accurately in different linguistic and cultural contexts. However, many Indonesian diplomats primarily speak English, which may limit their effectiveness in non-English-speaking countries. This paper examines the language training efforts of Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and compares them with those of the United Kingdom. It recommends implementing mandatory foreign language training during the first year of diplomatic assignments to improve diplomats’ language proficiency and enhance their adaptability and effectiveness in international missions.
