Kemlu as Identity Workspace for Indonesian Diplomats: the Need for Forward-Looking Identity Management
Modern diplomacy is undergoing significant changes due to digitalization, globalization, new diplomatic actors, and increasing public involvement. These developments require the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) to improve its human resource management, including recruitment, training, and career development. However, existing bureaucratic reforms have not fully addressed the challenges of modern diplomacy. This paper proposes strengthening Kemlu as an Identity Workspace to support diplomats’ professional identity through social defenses, sentient communities, and rites of passage. It recommends empowering Pusdiklat programs, improving institutional support for diplomats, and discussing the future definition of the Indonesian Diplomatic Service (JFD).
