Bolstering Sustanable Vegetable Oil Diplomacy in the European Union
The growing global demand for vegetable oils, particularly palm oil, soybeans, rapeseed, and sunflower oil, presents challenges in balancing production with environmental sustainability. This paper examines the European Union’s policies on palm oil biofuels and highlights inconsistencies in its treatment of different vegetable oils. It argues that palm oil can contribute to achieving several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) if environmental risks are properly addressed. Indonesia promotes a holistic and non-discriminatory approach to sustainable vegetable oils through bilateral, regional, and multilateral cooperation. The paper also recommends that Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs strengthen partnerships and collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including the European Union, to develop a more comprehensive and proactive sustainability strategy.
