Indonesian students in Al Azhar, Egypt: Challenges, problems, and how to address them
Egypt has become one of the most popular study destinations for Indonesian students, hosting 11,439 students as of August 2023—the largest number in the Middle East and possibly worldwide, with the majority enrolled at Al Azhar University. However, many students face significant academic and non-academic challenges during their studies, including a sharp rise in academic failures and cases involving health, social, and security issues. As the official representative of Indonesia in Egypt, the Indonesian Embassy in Cairo is constitutionally mandated to protect Indonesian nationals and address these problems. Drawing on a survey of students' actual experiences, this paper identifies limited Arabic proficiency and the absence of a rigorous pre-departure selection process in Indonesia as key contributing factors. To strengthen student protection, this paper offers three recommendations: establishing a group of interlocutors among students, creating legally binding MOUs with sending agencies, and improving the procedures for sending students to Egypt. It argues that establishing a group of interlocutors is the most feasible option for the Embassy to pursue.
