Navigating Indonesian foreign policy towards NATO following the alliance's renewed approach on Indo-Pacific
Indonesia’s relations with NATO have developed through several forms of interaction, including cooperation following the 2004 Aceh tsunami, the evacuation of Indonesian nationals from Afghanistan in 2021, and increased diplomatic engagement since 2022. NATO’s renewed focus on the Indo-Pacific and the changing international security environment have created new considerations for Indonesia’s foreign and defense policy. The discussion examines Indonesia’s policy options in managing its relations with NATO while maintaining an independent and active foreign policy. Three options are considered: strengthening Indonesia’s role as NATO’s Official Partner across the Globe, enhancing political dialogue and capacity-building cooperation, and maintaining existing interactions with NATO. The analysis highlights the importance of political dialogue and capacity building in shaping Indonesia’s engagement with the alliance.
