Outbound investment as an instrument for strengthening Indonesia’s food security: A case study of Indonesia’s state owned enterprises in Algeria
Outbound investment by PT Pupuk Indonesia (PI) in Algeria represents an effort to expand overseas business activities through the “BUMN Go Global” program and explore potential cooperation with PT Pertamina. The initiative is closely related to Indonesia’s efforts to strengthen food security, particularly in addressing limited domestic fertilizer resources. Investment in Algeria is expected to provide greater access to fertilizer resources while supporting Indonesia’s economic interests. To facilitate such investment, several measures are proposed, including the development of national regulations and a comprehensive strategy for outbound investment, the provision of information on potential investment sectors and state-owned enterprises, and the strengthening of the role of Indonesian diplomatic missions in identifying and supporting investment opportunities in Algeria.
