Empowering 'Safe Travel' application in efforts to ensure more effective governance and delivery of actual and reliable information to general public
The use of information systems in consular services and the protection of Indonesian citizens abroad has become increasingly important, particularly for collecting and managing data to support emergency assistance and rapid responses. This paper examines the development and implementation of the Safe Travel application, introduced by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide travelers with information on security, health, and socio-cultural conditions in destination countries. Although the application has undergone several technological developments since its launch in 2018, challenges remain in data quality, data governance, information reliability, regulatory frameworks, resource allocation, and coordination among relevant stakeholders. The paper therefore proposes strengthening the application’s operational mechanisms, improving coordination between information providers and administrators, and establishing a dedicated operational unit involving diplomats, program developers, and data analysts to ensure reliable information and continuous service. These measures are intended to improve the effectiveness of the Safe Travel application in meeting the information needs of Indonesian citizens abroad and supporting consular protection.
