Neconomic as a potential niche market for Indonesian economic diplomacy
The COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to the growth of Japan’s neko nomics, a term describing the economic impact of people’s affection for cats, with cat-related products, services, tourism, cafés, food, and activities generating significant economic value. This phenomenon presents a potential niche market for Indonesia, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), by expanding economic diplomacy beyond conventional strategic sectors such as palm oil, nickel, and other strategic industries. This paper examines the potential of the cat-related niche market as an alternative area for Indonesia’s economic diplomacy and explores approaches to strengthen its development. It highlights the importance of collaboration among government institutions, the private sector, SMEs, and other stakeholders, while also utilizing promotional activities and exhibitions to increase market visibility. By adopting a more focused and coordinated approach, Indonesia can explore the potential of the cat-related market as a niche sector that supports SME development and contributes to sustainable economic opportunities.
