Indonesian Diplomat - Interpreter: Qou vadis?
This paper examines the current state and future direction of diplomat-interpreters (D-Is) within Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Following the enactment of Law No. 24/2009 mandating the use of Bahasa Indonesia by the President in high-level international meetings held in Indonesia, the Ministry established an English-Bahasa Indonesia diplomat-interpreter team in 2011, deployed across various forums from foreign ministers' press statements to international conferences attended by Indonesian presidents. However, current conditions indicate stagnation and unclear future development for D-Is. Through analysis of deployment requests, field challenges, and alignment with the Ministry's Talent Management system, the study proposes two policy recommendations: (1) institutionalizing the existence of D-Is within the Ministry's structure, and (2) adjusting the proportion of interpreting skills assessment for D-Is in the talent management system to ensure sustainable development and utilization of this strategic asset.
