Strengthening gender mainstreaming to enhance Indonesia’s positive image
This paper examines efforts by Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to promote gender mainstreaming in alignment with national and international commitments, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on gender equality. Although Indonesia ranks 87th out of 146 countries in the 2023 Global Gender Gap Index, the government has undertaken various legislative and policy measures to achieve gender equality. The Ministry has implemented several policies and initiatives, including improvements to facilities and infrastructure to create a more inclusive work environment. However, further progress is needed. The paper proposes policy options to strengthen gender mainstreaming within the Ministry: (1) developing a gender mainstreaming roadmap, (2) increasing women's representation in senior positions within the Ministry and Indonesian Representatives abroad, (3) amplifying the Kemlu Sisterhood program, (4) conducting a study on daycare or preschool allowances, and (5) improving facilities to create a more comfortable and inclusive environment. Strengthening gender mainstreaming is expected to catalyze positive change, foster more inclusive policies, and enhance the Ministry's reputation and influence on the global stage.
