Leveraging Indonesianists abroad: A strategy for enhancing Indonesia's policy efficacy through knowledge networks
The crucial role of Indonesianists in shaping global understanding and policy towards Indonesia is examined in this paper. Indonesianists are scholars and experts who specialise in Indonesian studies. The areas that this global understanding and policy covers are politics, culture and economics. From Benedict Anderson's analysis of nationalism to Clifford Geertz's ethnographic insights, Indonesianists have offered profound and nuanced perspectives that have informed international academic and diplomatic perspectives. However, the decline in the number of Indonesianists poses risks to Indonesia's global representation and soft power, threatening the loss of expertise needed for national development. While the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has engaged in various initiatives, these remain "event-based", discontinuous and lack intentionality for meaningful communication. The paper therefore proposes a systematic and continuous engagement strategy across three time horizons: (1) involving Indonesian overseas missions in diplomacy, (2) creating domestic regulations to support the development of Indonesianists, and (3) establishing a global network of Indonesianists to strengthen Indonesia's position and influence on the global stage, in line with Vision 2045.
