Beyond nickel: Rethinking Indonesia's strategy to win the global race on critical minerals
The increasing global demand for critical minerals and the vulnerability of their supply chains have intensified geopolitical competition among major economies seeking to secure access to these strategic resources. In this context, Indonesia’s critical mineral resources, particularly nickel, create opportunities to strengthen its position in the global supply chain. This study discusses Indonesia’s role in responding to global competition for critical minerals by examining international supply-chain dynamics and strategies adopted by major economies, including the United States, Japan, Australia, and South Korea. The analysis identifies key challenges related to resource nationalism, green protectionism, value-chain diversification, and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards. The study proposes policy directions involving technology access, regional supply-chain cooperation, downstream development, and international partnerships to strengthen Indonesia’s critical minerals strategy and expand its participation in emerging global markets.
