Observing Africa: Challenges and opportunities to enhance Indonesian gastronomy through promotion of spice products
Indonesia has diverse culinary traditions and abundant spice resources that provide opportunities for strengthening cultural and economic cooperation with African countries. African societies also have strong traditions of using spices and flavorful ingredients, creating potential for the promotion of Indonesian gastronomy in the region. This study discusses the opportunities and challenges of promoting Indonesian gastronomy in Africa by examining culinary resources, market potential, product adaptation, and cooperation with local stakeholders. The analysis indicates that Indonesia’s culinary diversity, particularly its spice-based cuisine, can support gastronomic diplomacy and expand Indonesia’s cultural and economic engagement in Africa. Effective promotion requires market research, product adaptation, targeted marketing, and partnerships with relevant stakeholders. The study recommends developing an integrated strategy to promote Indonesian gastronomy in Africa through market-oriented approaches and international cooperation, thereby strengthening Indonesia’s culinary presence and broader engagement on the continent.
