Optimizing Indonesian coffee diplomacy: An extensive strategy for global market competitiveness
Indonesia, as the world’s fourth-largest coffee producer, faces challenges in strengthening its coffee industry, including the absence of a cohesive national strategy, declining plantation areas, and stringent trade barriers. The country produces high-quality Robusta and Arabica coffee, including specialty varieties such as Kopi Luwak and single-origin coffees from Gayo, Mandailing, and Toraja. Growing global demand for specialty and sustainable coffee provides opportunities for market expansion, particularly in Europe, while competition from producing countries and international trade requirements remains a concern. Key strategies include developing a comprehensive national coffee strategy, establishing a unified national brand, improving quality standards, strengthening research and development, expanding global marketing, and negotiating better trade terms. These measures are intended to strengthen Indonesia’s global coffee competitiveness, increase export revenues, support coffee farmers and exporters, and promote sustainable growth of the national coffee industry.
