Intensifying and leveraging secondment of Indonesian diplomats in the UN bodies to serve Indonesia’s interest in Multilateral Fora
The representation of Indonesia within the United Nations (UN) system is an important instrument for strengthening the country’s influence and participation in multilateral diplomacy. However, the number of Indonesian diplomats serving through secondment to UN bodies remains limited due to insufficient policy support, limited understanding of available opportunities, and concerns about competing with other countries. This study examines the challenges and opportunities in increasing the deployment and strategic utilization of Indonesian diplomats within the UN system, particularly to strengthen Indonesia’s representation at decision-making levels. The analysis emphasizes the role of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its overseas missions in supporting secondment mechanisms and enhancing diplomatic capacity. The study proposes policy recommendations to increase the number and effectiveness of Indonesian representatives in international organizations and strengthen Indonesia’s role and participation in multilateral forums.
