Reinvigorating Indonesia-India-Austalia Trilateral cooperation to maintain stability in the Indo-Pacific Region
The growing strategic importance of the Indian and Pacific Oceans has strengthened the significance of the Indo-Pacific region and the roles of Indonesia, India, and Australia. Since 2017, the three countries have developed trilateral cooperation, which was elevated to the ministerial level in 2022. However, differences in diplomatic capabilities, national interests, and levels of commitment have limited the development of strategic cooperation. Indonesia has also shown reservations due to concerns about being associated with emerging minilateral groupings such as the QUAD. Strengthening trilateral cooperation is considered relevant to promoting regional stability and supporting Indonesia’s strategic interests amid increasing regional uncertainty and maritime competition. Cooperation can be advanced by utilizing the trilateral framework to support key areas of collaboration within the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, while strengthening dialogue and partnerships among the three countries.
