Reimagining diplomatic support: Enhancing the performance and well-being of diplomats through working spouse policy
This study examines the potential of a working spouse policy to support diplomatic families and enhance the performance and well-being of Indonesian diplomats. It highlights employment barriers faced by diplomatic spouses, particularly in dual-career households, and their implications for family stability and diplomatic effectiveness. The paper proposes a phased approach involving bilateral working spouse agreements, capacity-building and remote work programs, and regional frameworks for spousal employment. Implementing such a policy could strengthen gender equity, family well-being, and the effectiveness of Indonesia’s diplomatic corps.
