Strategic economic diplomacy amidst global boycotts: Indonesia’s response and opportunity for national product promotion
This paper examines Indonesia's economic diplomacy in responding to global boycotts of Israel-affiliated products since October 2023 and explores opportunities to promote national products as alternatives. The boycott movement has significantly impacted multinational consumer industries such as coffee chains, quick-service restaurants, and FMCGs in Muslim-majority countries across the Middle East and Southeast Asia. As ASEAN's largest economy, a G20 member, and the world's largest Muslim-populated country, Indonesia can leverage shifting global consumer preferences to penetrate the halal market. The paper recommends optimizing IUAE-CEPA and developing a national branding strategy such as "Indonesia-Trusted Halal Partner" to capture the UAE market as a gateway to like-minded countries, with focus on products like halal cosmetics.
