From diaspora dependence to market creation: Refocusing Indonesia’s gastrodiplomacy to strengthen economic diplomacy
The role of gastrodiplomacy in the strengthening of Indonesia's economic diplomacy in the direction of the 2045 national vision is the subject of this paper. Using SWOT, systems thinking and design thinking analyses, it identifies structural challenges, such as inconsistent policies, poor quality control and logistics, and limited funding, while recognising opportunities in global food trends, digital transformation and strategic partnerships. Two policy options are compared: empowering diaspora-owned businesses, and creating broader markets by shaping foreign consumer preferences through trend creation, influencers, digital platforms, improved logistics and product innovation. The findings suggest that market creation is a more strategic and sustainable approach as it broadens the reach of Indonesian cuisine beyond diaspora consumers. The document proffers this option as the primary stratagem, bolstered by the empowerment of the diaspora and the implementation of pilot projects in select countries, executed in a phased manner.
