Nickel as a geopolitical leverage
Indonesia’s dominance in global nickel production creates a strategic opportunity to strengthen its geopolitical position, promote economic growth, and support the energy transition. However, this potential is constrained by China’s influence over the industry’s supply chain, limited technological and human-resource capabilities, and inadequate sustainability standards. This paper examines Indonesia’s domestic nickel policies and international standing while assessing the opportunities and risks associated with economic dependency. It proposes three policy options: diversifying international partners, restructuring supply chains to increase domestic value creation, and developing standards and rules governing nickel production and trade. These measures aim to strengthen industrial autonomy, enhance competitiveness, and maximize nickel’s strategic value in advancing Indonesia’s national interests.
