Beyond nostalgia: Restoring the relevance and significance of the Bandung Spirit

This policy paper examines Indonesia’s declining role in advancing the Bandung Spirit and South–South cooperation amid a shift toward transactional and economically driven diplomacy. Using scenario planning and SWOT analysis, it explores strategies to reconcile Indonesia’s national interests with the principles of anti-colonialism, equality, solidarity, and equitable multilateralism. The paper recommends institutionalizing South–South cooperation, establishing a Bandung Spirit Global Forum, strengthening public and educational diplomacy, integrating Bandung values into BRICS+, and improving interministerial coordination. These initiatives aim to revitalize Indonesia’s leadership in the Global South while adapting the Bandung legacy to contemporary geopolitical and economic challenges.
