Journey to the west
Journey to the West is one of the four great classical novels of Chinese literature, traditionally attributed to Wu Cheng’en. The novel narrates the legendary pilgrimage of the Buddhist monk Xuanzang to India to obtain sacred scriptures, accompanied by his supernatural disciples, most notably the Monkey King, Sun Wukong. Blending mythology, folklore, religious allegory, and satire, the story reflects Chinese cultural values, Buddhist philosophy, and popular imagination. This English translation by W. J. F. Jenner presents the classic tale to international readers while preserving its narrative richness and cultural significance.
