Engineers of jihad: The curious connection between violent extremism and education
The violent actions of a few extremists can alter the course of history, yet there persists a yawning gap between the potential impact of these individuals and what we understand about them. In Engineers of Jihad, Diego Gambetta and Steffen Hertog seek to narrow that gap. Departing from the puzzling fact that a disproportionate share of Islamist radicals come from an engineering background, they find that the same is true for right-wing extremists-while engineers are absent among left- wing extremists, where graduates of humanities and social sciences are prominent. Deploying a wide range of methods and several new datasets, they show that the link between education level, discipline of study, and type of radicalism can be explained by both the social frustrations and psychological traits of would-be radicals. Now with a new preface by the authors, Engineers of Jihad yields unexpected answers about the nature and emergence of extremism.
